This summer, we ask that you spend a little time thinking about how different artists convey information.

Each month, June, July, and August, we’ll post a new webpage to this site with a few step for you to follow. There will be a painting to examine, a short video to watch, and a text to think about.

At the end of each month, we’ll have a 1-hour discussion in-person at Marina. For full participation, we ask that you attend at least 2 of these discussions.

Discussions are scheduled for:
Wednesday, June 28, 3pm (Topic: The June Webpage)
Monday, July 31, 3pm (Topic: The July Webpage)
Friday, August 25, 3pm (Topic: The August Webpage)

How to Read a Painting

    1 / 3
  • Step 1: Observe from a Distance

Start by stepping back and observing the painting as a whole. Take in the composition, colors, and overall mood of the artwork. This initial observation allows you to grasp the painting's overall impact and sets the stage for a closer examination.

  • Step 2: Look Closer

Move closer to the painting and focus on specific areas of interest. Pay attention to the brushstrokes, lines, and shapes used by the artist. Take note of any patterns or textures that emerge. Allow your eyes to wander across the canvas, gradually absorbing the intricacies of the painting.

  • Step 3: Analyze the Details

Dive deeper into the painting's details. Look for finer elements such as facial expressions, gestures, objects, or landscapes. Note the play of light and shadow, the use of perspective, and the level of detail in various areas. Consider how these details contribute to the overall narrative or message of the artwork.

  • Step 4: Consider the Artist's Style

Reflect on the artist's technique and style. Look for unique approaches to color, brushwork, and texture. Analyze how the artist has used these techniques to create depth, convey emotions, or capture specific elements. Consider the technical skill employed and how it enhances the overall visual impact.

  • Step 5: Connect with the Artwork

Finally, reflect on your personal response to the painting. Consider the emotions, thoughts, or stories that arise within you as you examine the details. What does the painting evoke or communicate to you? Engage in a dialogue with the artwork, allowing your own interpretation and connection to form.

You can even consider how the artwork connects to other works of art (including texts!).
