August: What does it mean to mean?August: What does it mean to mean?
This month we’d like you to consider how meaning is made.
To “mean something” refers to the act of conveying or representing a specific idea, concept, intention, or message through language, symbols, actions, or any form of expression. When something has meaning, it possesses significance or relevance beyond its surface appearance. It involves the communication of information, emotions, or values, allowing individuals to understand, interpret, and relate to the subject or context in question.
From the subtle strokes of a masterful painting to the intricately woven words of literary works, we aim to unravel the complexities and nuances that contribute to the significance behind these artistic expressions.
As you consider this month’s painting and text, remember to look for any meanings they may be creating BEYOND your initial impressions.
If any exist, be sure to think about HOW the works are creating these meanings for you.
Step 1 of 4: Examine
Step 2 of 4: Watch
Step 3 of 4: Read
Step 4 of 4: Record
Jot down some of your thoughts.
Try to have something interesting about the painting as well as the reading and the poem.
Your goal is to have a record of some interesting observations and comments to share at our summer discussion. Bring these with you to the Discussion Day at Marina, Friday, August 25, 2023.
